Prayer of Confession (unison)

Heavenly Father, every father’s day we remember our father.  On mother’s day we remember our moms.  There was a day when your heart was broken as a father.  The day was when your only son died for humankind.  And although it was anguishing for Jesus, he chose to please you and be a servant for our sake.    When we examine ourselves, we can admit honestly to you that we fail to be servants like our Lord Jesus.  You say ‘take your differences to the cross of my Son.’  Yet we keep accurate accounts of wrongs suffered.  You say, ‘Pick up your cross daily and follow me’.  But we refuse to serve.  We humbly admit our sin.  We ask for the mind of Jesus, who although he had rights, made his decision, and took his rights to the cross for us.  O Servant of us all, give us  each your servant’s mind for the brief time we are on earth until with Christ and all the saints you exalt us in heaven.

SERMON NOTES - Deuteronomy 31: 1-23 and Philippians 2: 1-15

I.                     It took a warrior heart and mind to cross the river

A.                   The Lord sent the people--and the Lord crossed with them       Deuteronomy 31: 3 (wow!)

B.                   The Lord asks, “Be strong and bold, have no fear” v. 6 & 8

C.                  The Lord summoned a person to go with the people (v. 7-8)

1.       The Lord summons servants to do their part.  Every Christian is a           member of the body of Christ, we need every part! (1 Corinthians     12 “Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many.”)

D.                  People naturally are inclined to forget we serve God, 31: 19-21               although God promises to be faithful to his children (31: 3-5)

1.       God writes a song for warriors, 32: 3 Worthy of worship; v. 4-Faithful;     v. 10-15 Provider; v. 16-35 People naturally lose heart and loyalty to      God; People forget to serve God,  v. 20 & 32.15, 18

2.       In times of national upheaval (like the Cold War and prior to the              American Revolution) this nation has turned to God in humility and God            filled people with a warrior heart and mind.  32: 21-23

3.       V. 36 God brings forgiveness and restores a willing warrior heart

II.                    When person has decided to be a servant, the other questions fall into place

A.                   God has made you and me his masterpiece...like God’s own Son           to serve as he did.

B.                   We naturally forget we are servants and that God is with us.

C.                  When we decide we are a servant, the other questions are       answered

1.       A person who receives Jesus’ mind of a servant knows

a)                   Whether to forgive a wrong suffered

b)                   That money belongs to God, and we are only servants              entrusted

c)                   That volunteering is not an option, it is a way of life

d)                   Unites with the body of Christ to serve our community,               instead of self

e)                   When we receive Christ’s servant heart and mind we                 have the courage to cross the river before us, into the land chosen for us----our community.  We settle the question of why our church is here.  We are here to be servants-period.

III.                  Jesus gave you a heart and mind of a servant

A.                   Jesus gives you the heart and mind of a servant “let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus” 2: 5

B.                   Jesus’ death (v.8) replaces v.3 (selfish ambition) with v.5 (the mind of    Jesus)

1.       for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and             to work for his good pleasure” (2.13).’

2.       Jesus gives you and me the energy and willingness to be a servant like                he was.  This is a God thing!!!

C.                  Maturity is making daily choices with the mind of Jesus, 3: 5, “Let            those of us then who are mature be of the same mind” (3: 15)...      “Forgetting what lies behind...I press on (3: 13) to cross the river to                         serve as Jesus did!!

IV.                 You can be a new person.

A.                   Have you ever had an old lousy song stuck in your head?  Many            of us get stuck with a person we can’t get rid of---a selfish, self-       centered                us.  Jesus’ promise is this:  I’ll make a new you.

B.                   Jesus’ gives you and me a new heart and mind to cross over our            river.

1.       Unite in our mission this year, “forgetting what lies behind”, and fly         for the hive.

2.       Fly for God’s hive this year with the heart and mind of Christ---                Because                you are a servant.  Because you have been given a warrior spirit, even            the heart and mind of God’s precious Son.
